WAEC Records Mass Failure In This Year's Exam

West African Examination Council WAEC
yesterday released the examination results of the
2014 West African Senior School Certificate May/
June exam recording mass failure in core
subjects including English and Yoruba.
Announcing the results, yesterday, at WAEC
office, Yaba, the Head of National Office, WAEC,
Mr. Charles Eguridu said: “A total of 529,425
candidates, representing 31.28 per cent,
obtained credits in five subjects and above,
including English Language and Mathematics.”
He noted that when compared to the 2012 and
2013 May/June WASSCE results, there was
marginal decline in the performance of candidates
as 38.81 per cent was recorded in 2012 and
36.57 per cent in 2013.
Eguridu, who disclosed that the results of
145,795 candidates, representing 8.61 per cent,
are being withheld in connection with various
types of examination malpractice said: “The
cases are being investigated and the reports of
the investigations will be presented in November
to the Nigeria Examinations Committee, NEC.
”According to him, out of 1,692,435 candidates
that sat for the examination, 791,227 candidates,
representing 46.75 per cent, obtained six credits
and above, just as a total of 982,472 candidates
representing 58.05 per cent, obtained five credits
and above.
In addition, he stated that 1,148,262 candidates,
representing 67.84 per cent, obtained credits
and above in four subjects, while 1,293,389
candidates, representing 76.42 per cent,
obtained credits and above in three subjects.
He said out of the 161 visually-handicapped
candidates, who registered for the examination,
21 of them, representing 14 per cent obtained
credits in five subjects, including English
language, adding, “blind candidates do not take
mathematics and science practicals in the
WASSCE.”
In his analysis, he said: “A total of 1,705,976
candidates registered for the examination, out of
which 1,692,435 candidates, consisting of
929,075 male and 763,360 female candidates
sat for  the examination.
“Of the total number of candidates that sat for the
examination, 1,605,613 candidates, representing
94.87 per cent have their results fully released,
while 86,822 candidates, representing 5.13 per
cent have a few of their subjects still being
processed due to some errors, mainly traceable
to laxity on the part of the candidates and the
schools, in the course of registration or writing
the examination.
“Such errors are being corrected by the Council
to enable the affected candidates get their results
fully processed and released as soon as they are
ready.
”Meanwhile, to curb examination
malpractice, WAEC has announced the
introduction of ICT-driven device which will
enable supervisors and staff of the Council on
duty to address and record in real time the
processes on the day of the examination.
The HNO said: “With effect from the May/June
2014 WASSCE, the Council introduced a device
known as Candidates Identity Verification,
Attendance, Malpractice and Post Examinations
Management System, CIVAMPEMS.
“This ICT-driven device enables supervisors and
staff of the Council on duty, to address and
record in real time the processes on the day of
the examination.
“These include identity verification, capturing and
recording occurrences as they happen, such as
candidates’ attendance and examination
malpractice and transmit same to our data base.
“With this, the Council is able to generate valid
examination reports for each examination
centre.”
He noted that the Council, beginning with the
November/December 2014 WASSCE, will
introduce customised, transparent mathematical
sets, with in-built non-programmable scientific
calculators, which conform with the rules and
regulations of its examinations.
He urged all prospective candidates, for both the
May/June and November/December WASSCE
diets to note that, henceforth, bringing in any
other non-approved mathematical set or
calculator into examination halls would not be
allowed.
“Models of the WAEC-customised mathematical
set would be made available to schools to assist
them in preparing their candidates for the
Council”s examinations,” he said.
He also said that “the Council, with effect from
2014 WASSCE, is introducing biometric enabled
certificates.
Each certificate will have a QR code with details
of the candidate’s biometrics.”

Ariana Grande Dating Rapper Big Sean:"New Couple Have Been Getting Very Close"

New (and a bit surprising) couple alert!
It looks like singer Ariana Grande and rapper Big
Sean have taken their friendship to a new level. A
source tells E! News that the pair, who worked on
Grande's hit "Problem" together, are dating.
"They have been friends since they made the song
together. They have been spending more time
together and recently have been getting very
close. They are both doing great," the source tells
us. Big Sean's rep had no comment on the matter,
while Grande's rep has yet to respond.
Arianna and Big Sean were also spotted at The
Grove in Los Angeles after leaving the theater
from a late showing of The Purge.
An eyewitness tells E! News the duo came in
about a quarter way into the movie, and only
about three people recognized them. Source also
claims that he saw the pair kissing during the
film, and left before it was over.
Earlier this month, E! News exclusively broke that
Ariana ended things with her 19-year-old Aussie
boyfriend Jai Brooks last month. "When her
grandfather was dying, everyone was there for
her. People flew to Florida to be with her, but Jai
didn't," the source said. "Ariana just felt he
wasn't there like he should have been."
Meanwhile, the rapper was engaged to Glee star
Naya Rivera but the pair ended up splitting in
April after Big Sean, "made the difficult decision to
call the wedding off." Following the public
breakup, Rivera shocked everyone by marrying
actor Ryan Dorsey in a super secret Mexico
wedding three months later.

Jennifer Lopez Shows Off Her Backside In Revealing Shorts

She can dance. She can sing. Oh, and she can
work legs for days.
Jennifer Lopez stepped out in Beverly Hills, Calif.,
Monday where she couldn't help but show off her
fabulous figure.
The 45-year-old mother of two headed to a few
morning meetings wearing a long-sleeved button
down blouse with matching shorts. She completed
her ensemble with white pumps and jewelry.
Although her shorts looked super comfy (and
cute), photographers managed to snap a pic that
showcases part of the American Idol judge's
backside.
Lopez's sexy summer outfit comes one day after
the "Dance Again" singer surprised viewers at the
2014 Teen Choice Awards by reuniting with her
Maid in Manhattan costar, Tyler Posey.
12 years after costarring in the 2002 romantic
comedy, Posey asked if he could work with the
talented star again.
"I thought that maybe if you needed a backup
dancer, I'd fit," Posey said during the show.
"What do you think?"
Although his moves were far from impressive,
Lopez was still more than excited to see her
movie son again.
"Aww look at Ty all grown up!! @i_love_harveys
#teenchoiceawards," Lopez wrote after the show.

Jonathan Calls First Ebola Victim A 'Madman'

President Goodluck Jonathan on
Monday branded a Liberian-American a
"madman" for bringing Ebola into Nigeria, as
the country announced its 10th confirmed case
of the deadly virus.
Patrick Sawyer died in a Lagos hospital on July
25 in the country's first case of Ebola, which
has claimed the lives of nearly 1 000 people in
West Africa since the start of the year.
The 40-year-old, who was to have attended a
meeting of the regional bloc ECOWAS
(Economic Community of West African States),
was taken to hospital after arriving in Lagos on
a flight from Monrovia via the Togolese capital,
Lome.

panic about Ebola
A nurse who treated him died last week, while
tests last weekend confirmed that another had
also contracted the virus. Eight others have
also tested positive, the government said.
"It is unfortunate that one madman brought the
Ebola to us but we have to contain it,"
Jonathan told faith leaders at a conference in
the capital, Abuja, vowing the government
would do "everything possible" to combat its
spread.
Nigeria had until last month been spared from
Ebola, which has spread alarmingly in Guinea,
Sierra Leone and Liberia.
But its arrival has sown fear throughout the
countr. The authorities in sub-Saharan Africa's
largest city have appealed for volunteers
because of a shortage of medical personnel,
exacerbated by a month-long doctors' strike.
A number of measures to tackle the spread of
Ebola, which is passed on through direct
contact with an infected person displaying
symptoms, have already been announced.

Jonathan last week declared a national
emergency in line with World Health
Organization (WHO) advice to affected countries
to trigger disaster response procedures.
Greater funding has been promised to set up
additional isolation centres, border screenings
and contact tracing, while Nigerians have been
told to avoid large gatherings.
'Crazy man'
In his address, Jonathan told faith leaders to
help get the message across and also to pay
close attention to traditional burial ceremonies,
given that the Ebola virus is transmissible from
dead bodies.
"We must advise our people not to over-
celebrate burial now," he said.
Jonathan said that Sawyer contracted Ebola
because his sister died from the infection and
he attended her funeral.
"(He) became a suspect. And the country
(Liberia) asked him not to leave the country so
that he will be observed but the crazy man
decided to smuggle himself out and now we are
suffering because of it," he added.
Following strict professional health advice was
now paramount, Jonathan said, adding: "If we
manage it well we can get over it in two months
and we will return to our normal lives."

The WHO said on Friday there were 13 probable
and suspect cases of Ebola, including two
deaths, in Nigeria.
The global health body is discussing the
possible use of an experimental treatment to try
to stem the spread.
Health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu pleaded for
the National Medical Association to call off its
strike, with the union split between those who
want to return to work to tackle the crisis and
those intent on staying out.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS)
meanwhile said it had activated all its
volunteers to get across preventative measures
to the public, particularly seeking early medical
advice and treatment.
Secretary-general Bello Hamman Diram said 18
volunteers were assisting in areas such as
contact tracing, health promotion, case
management and public information schemes.
Some 300 other volunteers will be deployed to
help the federal and Lagos State governments
in providing protective equipment as well as
educational and hygiene materials.

Cesc Is The Future-Mourinho

Jose Mourinho heralded Cesc
Fabregas as Chelsea's new playmaker in place
of the departed Frank Lampard and urged fans
to greet him and his squad before Chelsea's
first home friendly in eight years.
Chelsea meet Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge
and plan to parade their full senior squad on the
pitch before the sold-out match.
"Lampard is our history, but Fabregas is our
future, Mourinho told the club website, adding
that both he and his players believe the
Spaniard is the right man to play in central
midfield.
"Frank is the history of the club, history nobody
can forget," said Mourinho. "Fabregas is the
future. History is history, but the future is more
important at the moment."
"My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is
that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that
central position in midfield."
Chelsea beat Ferencvaros 2-1 in Budapest in a
friendly courtesy of goals from Ramires and
Fabregas, who impressed after his introduction
at the interval.
"They (Ferencvaros) fought for a result until the
last minute and that was good for us," said
Mourinho. "They competed and that was
important."
Fabregas' solo goal capped a fine display that
convinced many observers that he will be a
more than adequate successor to all-time
Chelsea top scorer Lampard.
Lampard, 36, left Chelsea in June to join MLS
outfit New York City. He is currently on loan
with English champions Manchester City.
In another website message, the club said
Mourinho requested that supporters going to
the sold-out match at Stamford Bridge arrive in
time to herald a parade of the entire first team
squad.
"It is the first time we have hosted a friendly at
our home since 2006 - and it promises to be a
memorable evening, with the sold-out crowd
given the opportunity to welcome each of the
players," said the club.
After signing midfielder Fabregas, striker Diego
Costa, left-back Filipe Luis and returning club
legend, striker Didier Drogba, along with recalled
loanees defender Kurt Zouma and goalkeeper
Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea are tipped as
favourites to depose Manchester City as
Premier League champions.
The English Premiership starts on Saturday,
August 16 but Chelsea are not in action until
they visit promoted Burnley on Monday - a
fixture for which Mourinho is confident his team
will be perfectly prepared.
"It's been a difficult pre-season because we
started with seven players," said Mourinho.
"After that, step by step, players were arriving
after the World Cup and holidays."
"Finally, in this last week, we've had everybody
together, but obviously not everyone is
prepared. For example, (Branislav) Ivanovic has
been training for one month, (Andre) Schurrle
has trained for five days."
"So there is a big difference between players.
We have to play the first league match next
weekend and we will be ready for that."

How Much Does It Cost To Eat?

Everyone feeds and as nutrition is a
fundamental characteristic of biotic
construction, there is none alive that does not
eat! While a lot of us may be averse to eating
out, there are those as few as they may be,
who take flights (e.g. Abuja to Lagos) to
savour that special treat at that renowned
cove- that is as bad as it is; as good as it
gets.
I fondly remember how during a cholera
outbreak in Abeokuta (later denied...) people
still ate out. Ironically, a doctor contracted the
epidemic right in the Emergency Unit; yes,
without having to eat out. Something about a
patient's vomitus splashing... (I hereby save
you the gory details.)
With safety and hygiene no longer valid points
in the debate, those of us that do not eat out
insist it is rather cost-effective, a stance that is
perpetually challenged by those that do,
particularly on the basis that the variety,
adventure, freedom, that one enjoys eating out
far surpasses whatever profits one may realise
otherwise.
So... Just how much do you save when you
choose to cook rather than eat out frequently?
And why should it even concern you?
If you are a student you must have avoided
asking the latter question since you very well
understand why it concerns you. Indeed in an
economy where resources are scarce
maximization is the rule rather than the
exception. As a bachelor, should I swallow my
ego and trounce Ughelli main market in search
of Maggi and pepper or eat out at my
innominate regular spot with my cloven? By the
way the answer is 60%.
You save 60%.
Now to the matter...
Let's examine the facts using a thirty-food
serving period. How much would it cost you to
eat to satisfaction 3 times a day for 10 days?
At a very conservative estimate of 400 naira per
meal you require 12 000 naira. Why is this
conservative? Do I even need to expatiate on
that?
Apart from the need to be served double
portions you are more likely to pay above
budget for the cow head, the orobo (big; 50cL)
coke or the extra side of beef. Yet, this
assumes you live within walking distance from
your favourite food vendor. It also presumes
you will strictly avoid forays into the more
illustrious fast food joints such as Mr Biggs,
McDonald's,... (No offense intended.)
How much do you require for 3 times a day
homemade meals for 10 days.
Say you focused on the staples rice, beans,
garri and yam. A basket of rice here costs 900
naira consisting of 24 peak milk cups.
Assuming 2 milk cups per meal it comes to 12
servings. An average 300-naira tuber of yam
goes for 2 servings; half a basket of beans of
450 naira goes up to 12 servings especially
when you add potatoes of say 200. A basket of
garri for 350 would last you at least 7 servings-
if you are not feeding to be sold, that is.
Already past 30 servings.
Next is the tricky part: soup and stew. But it
does not defy analysis.
Well priced, 800 naira worth of meat should
outlast 12 servings of rice. So will 400 naira
worth of fish for 6 servings. Another 1 700 naira
should get you more than enough melon,
pepper, tomatoes and other condiments in
addition to energy. I'm assuming you use the
more energy efficient gas cooker or if a student,
the very pocket friendly electric cooker. Not so
energy friendly though.
In total you've just spent 5 100 naira procuring
your 33 plus servings. Correcting for the extra
servings leaves you with an unbelievably high
(above) 60% savings. But how can this be?
Could it possibly be that much?
Well, consider what you pay for: convenience
(or inconvenience) depending on how easily you
can procure your meals, not having to do the
dishes, being waited on by canteen staff, etc.
You also pay for the time these persons put
into these efforts which is understandable if you
have a demanding, time-consuming, job. They
after all say time is money.
This all seems very textbook and prone to
flaws. It would for instance cost me more to
prepare Edi (the Igbo draw-soup) but falls into
perspective when you pay 2 000 for single
serving of same in a two star hotel.
More importantly, this model also assumes that
the meals you make would be edible if not
palatable.
Personally, I remain grateful to my mum for
leaving me no choice but to learn to cook. For
those who missed kitchen posting, it may be
time to consider marrying. Indeed couples save
more money when they eat from the same pot
as compared to individually. This is so as it
may not be necessary to double all costs. For
instance, energy expenditure remains near
constant.
I think I have made my point. I refuse to dwell
on the economics of spending a million or two
in order to save on feeding costs. That is a
discussion for a later date.

Details On New Ebola Vaccine

Officials from the World Health
Organisation WHO said that the first round of
clinical trials of a potential Ebola vaccine made
by GlaxoSmithKline may begin next month and
the vaccine could possibly be available by 2015,
MSN News reported on Sunday.
Experimental medicine
According to NBC News, a "level 1 activation"
response has typically been reserved for only
the most dire and pressing emergencies, such
as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 or
the bird flu outbreak in 2009. The CDC has
already committed 50 more staff people to fly
to the area of the outbreak over the next month,
and more could follow.
Meanwhile, medical ethicists will meet next
week to discuss who should have access to the
limited supplies of an experimental medicine for
the deadly Ebola virus, the WHO said.
Also read: Did you know? No vaccines for
Ebola!
The drug was given to and benefited Dr. Kent
Brantly and Nancy Writebol, two American aid
workers who contracted the disease in West
Africa. It was the first time the drug was tried
on people, NBC News reported.
The maker of the drug has said it can't produce
large amounts of the experimental medicine,
which means only a limited number of patients
will be able to receive it. There is no certified
vaccine or cure for Ebola.
"We are in an unusual situation in this
outbreak," WHO official Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny
said in a statement, NBC reported. "We need to
ask the medical ethicists to give us guidance on
what the responsible thing to do is."

People Flee As Passenger Slumps,Dies At Lagos Airport

There was confusion at the Arrival Hall
of the Murtala Muhammed
International Airport on Monday, as a
passenger slumped and died.
Sources at the airport told us that
the passenger slumped in front of the
Port Health Services office, while
waiting to collect his vaccination card,
usually known as Yellow Card.
Some staff and passengers fled the
scene following the man’s collapse, as
they feared he was infected with the
deadly Ebola Virus Disease.
His body was covered with an orange-
coloured cloth and left unattended to by
the office. However, the area was
barricaded to forestall people coming
there, as people were redirected to pass
other routes.
Our correspondent gathered that the
dead man was supposed to fly to Ghana
for medical check-up when he suddenly
collapsed at the airport and died.
It was also gathered that the passenger,
who was of middle age, may be of Ibo
origin.
A lady that was seen accompanying him
before his sudden death was seen
making calls to their relatives in Igbo
language, telling them what happened.
The sad incident, which happened at
the arrival floor, set fear in the spine of
passengers and other airport officials
that witnessed what happened.
The female relative of the dead man,
who was crying, was quoted as saying,
“Ceekay, please get up; Ceekay, please
get up”.
Meanwhile, a statement later released
by the General Manager, Corporate
Communications of the Federal Airports
Authority of Nigeria, Mr. Yakubu Dati,
gave the late passenger’s name as Mr.
Akunne Osei.
It noted that the deceased was tested for
the Ebola virus and the result later
came in negative.
The statement said, “FAAN wishes to
inform the public that a Nigerian
passenger, residing in Accra, who
arrived Lagos for business transactions
aboard an Arik Air flight on Friday
August 8, 2014, has died at the Murtala
Mohammad Airport, Ikeja, on his way
back to Accra.
“The passenger, Osei, took ill on
Saturday August 9 and started stooling.
When the situation got worse, he called
his doctor in Accra, who instructed him
to return to Ghana immediately for
further treatment.
“During boarding formalities for his
return trip to Accra at the international
terminal of MMA, Osei, who had
obviously become weak at this time,
was subjected to Ebola Virus test by
port health officials, the result of which
was negative. No further attention was
paid to him after his Ebola Virus result
read negative but the passenger later
slumped and died around the port
health office.”

5 Useful Dating Tips For Men & Women

We all know men and women are from
different planets, but what if we looked for the
similarities? Maybe we could hook up more...
The good people at Newszoom asked a bunch of
men and women advice and dating and collected
all the best gender neutral advice. Here are the
top five tips:
1. Be open minded. Don’t go walking in there
having a checklist of things the other person has
to have to qualify to date you. You’re not the
CEO of love.
2. Don’t research the applicants. Definitely
don’t stalk them on social media. You will have
made up your mind before you see them. Made
up your mind wrong.
Also read: Hot sex position: Missionary Mondays
3. Don’t bring along baggage. It’s a date, not a
flight to a two week funeral procession abroad.
4. Be honest. That one is pretty obvious.
5. Leave on a high note. Ever noticed how good
performance leave after they play their biggest
hit? Do that. Don’t walk off stage after you
played one of the deep cuts off that obscure
release.

Man Who Specialises In Killing Women,Having Sex With Corpses Arrested In Ebonyi

Police have arrested a 20-year-old man,
Chukwuma (surname withheld), who
allegedly specialised in killing
Women and having sex with their dead
bodies in Ebonyi State. The suspect
allegedly killed three women along farm
pathways in the area and had sex with
them.
The state Police Public Relations Officer
(PPRO), Mr. Chris Anyanwu, who
confirmed the incident, said the suspect
was arrested after the police set him up
with a girl along a farm pathway and
he came out to strangle the girl to
death.
According to reports, anyanwu said the
suspect, who is a painter, confessed to
the crime and said he did it because his
people refused to stop calling him a
nickname he (suspect) hated.
The PRO said the suspect after killing
the last woman stole her N8,500 and
used it to buy handset and drink local
gin.
The PRO said:
“We nabbed him after placing
surveillance at a particular farm,
where he usually waylays women
who are going to farm or coming
back from farm. We got the
information that he had killed
three women in the same way. He
has the habit of waylaying the
women on lonely bush path.
Whenever a woman passes through
the place he pounces on her and
strangles her to death and has sex
with the dead body. One of these
women’s name is Anyigor from the
same village. On July 15, she went
to farm at a place called Okwulike
but never returned. Then, when he
was later arrested, he (the suspect)
confessed that he was hanging
around that farm area when he saw
the woman who is late now, and
pounced on her, strangled her to
death by grabbing her neck region
until she gave up before he had sex
with the dead woman and robbed
her of N8,500, which he found on
her.The suspect said he used the
money to buy Nokia handset phone
and used the remaining money to
drink local gin called ‘kaikai’.
The second incident happened a
week after, on July 23, the victim is
Mrs. Helen, a 54-year-old woman,
who went to Egiagu village to farm
and never returned.So, alarmed by
her non-return, her son alerted the
villagers and a search party later
found her dead body along the
lonely farm path. When Chukwuma
was arrested, he confessed that he
strangled the woman the same way
he strangled the other two
women.When interrogated, the
suspect said his annoyance was that
people from that community called
him a nickname ‘Sogbodo’, adding
that he had warned people to desist
from calling him the name but they
continued.”
