World Bank Offers FG $140m For Community Development

The World Bank on Wednesday said it would soon start the disbursement of $140m under its assisted Community and Social Development Project to 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory.The bank, in a statement issued in Abuja said about $200m (N39.4bn) had been disbursed under the first phase of the project, thus bringing the total amount provided under the programme to $340m.It said the States that benefit from the additional financing will focus on the most vulnerable households in poor communities in the country.Anambra, Kaduna and Sokoto states, it added will also be given additional funds.The statement said the additional financing was expected to fund micro-project facilities such as rehabilitation and construction of school class rooms, health centres, clinics and skills acquisition.
Others are rural electrification, rural transport, community water schemes, community housing schemes and rural market infrastructure.
It gave a list of vulnerable groups that would also benefit from special grants as internally displaced poor persons, marginalised or chronically poor households, widows and the physically challenged.
The World Bank Task Team Leader for the project, Foluso Okunmadewa in the statement, stated:
“This project will not only help vulnerable people in the short term, including those in conflict-affected areas, but will also help build and rebuild long-lasting partnership between local governments and communities.
In addition, it will help integrate communities as well as make smart investments in people for the future.
“The first phase of the World Bank funding of the Community Social Development Project, which benefited over 5,600 communities and about two million people in 26 states of the federation, was fully disbursed by December 2014.”

Ex-Beauty Queen Arrested For Faking Cancer

A former Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International pageant winner is facing felony charges, accused of lying about having cancer. Police arrested 23-year-old Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates on Tuesday August 11th and charged her with theft by deception and receiving stolen property.
Police say she told people she was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Police say fundraisers were held to help her with her medical bills. The most recent fundraiser, a Bingo for Brandi event, was held in April. It raised $14,000.
According to reports, the state police began investigating Weaver-Gates after an anonymous letter said she was "faking" cancer. Weaver-Gates told the Centre Daily Times in April of 2014 at the Relay for Life at Penn State, that she became cancer-free in October of 2013, but later in the year she got news that 5% of the cancer cells were back.
State police say there is no evidence that Weaver-Gates ever had treatment for cancer.
As for Weaver-Gates' beauty queen title, the pageant directors said they are shocked by the allegations and plan on stripping the title from her.
Pageant organizers issued the following statement Wednesday morning:
"We at Butler's Beauties are saddened to hear of the news of Miss Brandy Weaver-Gates. We were also led to believe that she was dealing with this horrible disease and stood by her as she struggled being a beauty queen and a cancer patient.
Butler's Beauties believes that with a crown and sash you can accomplish many great things as a role model, spokesmodel and community leader as a beauty pageant queen. When you deceive the public and take people's money that is under the pretence of fraud, we will not tolerate those actions. Our hearts go out to those affected by cancer and to those who were taken advantage of by Miss Weaver-Gates.
Effectively immediately, Ms. Weaver-Gates is no longer a representative of the Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International organization and will be required to return her crown and sash upon her release from being detained."

30 year old Richard Effiok, confessed to stabbing his girlfriend after three rounds of sex on Monday. Effiok, who identified his deceased girlfriend as 23 year old Bassey Udoh, said the incident happened on May 22, 2015, at Nelson Mandela

The suspect made the confession at the headquarters of the state police command on Diamond Hill Road, when he was paraded along with other suspected criminals by the
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Henry Fadairo. Effiok, who hails from the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state, said;
“The problem started when I had three rounds of sex with the lady and gave her N1,000 as transport fare back home, but she demanded N5,000.Bassey is my lover. We have been dating for two years. On the
day of her death, we had three rounds of sex. I can’t really say if I was tempted by the devil to kill her.When she refused to collect the N1,000 that I gave her, we started quarrelling and it led to a fight. I
brought out a sharp kitchen knife and stabbed her.After stabbing her, she screamed and neighbours broke into my room. They saw her on the ground in a pool of blood. She later died,” he said.
He said his neighbours were the ones who called the police to arrest him.
“I regret my actions, I wish I did not kill her,” he said.
